Thingway is (thankfully) in the final stretch now. Join the waitlist and you will receive the founders launch email in October 2026.
The mobile app is free to download and use. Some things sit behind Premium, a monthly or annual subscription because I am a person who does unfortunately have to eat. These include mostly customisation features like custom themes, book and essay presets, early access to beta features, and the specialist tools that are still being developed and updated: including on-device translation, and the custom thesaurus and dictionary written by hand for Thingway. A perpetual licence will also be made available.
The desktop app is paid. Once launched, this is a one-time perpetual licence for the version you bought, and it does not expire.
Thingway launches on Android and iOS first, with a desktop release across Windows, macOS and Linux to follow.
No. Your creations are ordinary files in a folder you choose. You can export into EPUB, PDF, DOCX, Markdown, or plain text, as many times as you like for free.
No. There is no sign-up required, and no login. You download and you're in. Desktop requires a paid licence: you get a key, you write.
Yes, with one caveat. Everything from the planner, to the editor, the spellchecker, thesaurus, translations, export, and everything else runs on your device. An internet connection is not required to write, but may be required to first access certain features that cannot fit app store size requirements, receive updates and verify purchases.
In a folder you pick, on your device. If you want it on more than one device, you point Thingway at your own cloud folder or sync over your local network. There is no Thingway server in the middle, because we do not run one.
It has been stress-tested at a million words, two thousand pages and three hundred chapters in a single file, on a modern Android phone. A full fantasy epic or a PhD thesis should work without complaint.
No. I cannot read your writing even if I wanted to, and I would not want to, at least not until you publish it (be it in academics or literary fiction!), and let me know so I can enjoy it!
If Thingway is ever sunset, we will ensure an installer is made available to those with a licence key, and keep it available for at least 12 months, and if viable, intend to release the source under an open licence so anyone can keep it going. That commitment will be written into the terms when Thingway goes on sale.
It is a word used in Scots. A hingway is the thing, the thingie, the thingwy. The word for a thing you are trying to describe when you can't fathom its name. Truth be told, the app was called 'Hingway' for most of its life, but I felt the anglicised variant would be more approachable in the end.
